چکیده

We present the case of a 4-year-old boy who was born with a large cervicofacial lymphatic malformation. It was partially resected in the first year of life and treated with Picibanil/OK-432 injections at the age of three because of recurrence. Eight months later the boy developed a fulminant streptococcal toxic shock syndrome with cardiac arrest. After resuscitation, high dose intravenous antibiotic therapy and artificial ventilation for 2 weeks, he remained with an extensive hypoxic brain damage. As Picibanil/OK-432 is a preparation of lyophilized, low virulence group A Streptococcus pyogenes cells of human origin, the question of a causative relationship for the tragic outcome arises. We therefore report the clinical course and discuss the action and possible side effects of Picibanil/OK-432.

Microbubbles in macrocysts – Contrast-enhanced ultrasound assisted sclerosant therapy of a congenital macrocystic lymphangioma: a case report

BACKGROUND Congenital cystic lymphangiomas are benign malformations due to a developmental disorder of lymphatic vessels. Besides surgical excision, sclerosant therapy of these lesions by intracavitary injection of OK-432 (Picibanil®), a lyophilized mixture of group A Streptococcus pyogenes, is a common therapeutical option. For an appropriate application of OK-432, a detailed knowledge about t...

We report a case of orbital lymphangioma in a girl who was given OK-432 to avoid surgery and its complications. DISCUSSION OK-432 is a lyophilized mixture of group A Streptococcus pyogenes which produces a fibrosis limited to the lesion with a high cure rate. The main advantages are the easy ...

Forty-one cervicofacial vascular anomalies and their surgical treatment--retrospection and review.

INTRODUCTION Haemangiomas in children usually involute spontaneously and surgical treatment is exceptional. Vascular malformations do not regress spontaneously and resection may become necessary. We present a series of surgically treated face and neck vascular anomalies during a 9-year period, assessing the epidemiology, presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic modalities, indications for surg...
